If we don't believe
in freedom of expression for people we despise, we don't believe
in freedom at all.
— Noam Chomsky
Course Overview
The purpose of the class is to stimulate thought provoking discussions through the analysis of banned and challenged books, video, music and film. A handful of works examined include Romeo & Juliet, To Kill a Mockingbird, The Outsiders, and Catcher in the Rye, as well as music by Johnny Cash, John Mellencamp, and Pearl Jam.
The class touches many issues including history, government, free speech, religion and more. Students explore the concept of censorship in school and the larger community, and discuss reasons why a particular work was challenged or banned. And finally, the class discusses issues, problems, and challenges on a variety of topics presented by the students.
