Course Description

In this beginning yoga class you will learn basic yoga postures that any body type or shape will be able to accomplish. Previous experience is not required. A large part of this course will be about learning ways to manage stress through meditation and meditative yoga movements.  Meditation is simply a particular way of paying attention to each moment as it occurs. This paying attention involves observing how the mind does its thinking. We will learn ways to improve focus and concentration which will be helpful in dealing with stressful situations that come up in life.  These skills will be helpful during the busy college years and for the rest of your life! Most of the anxiety or worry we may experience comes from the high emotion we attach to our thoughts. In Yoga Based Stress Management we will learn techniques to reduce this high emotion and calm our minds and bodies. No prior experience is required. Flexibility is NOT required. Come to class suited up for PE in clothes that allow for stretching and moving.
Class work will involve:

  • Proper positioning in basic beginning yoga postures
  • Practice basic yoga breathing techniques
  • Beginning meditation
  • Developing concentration
  • Creating balance and strength
  • Increasing flexibility
  • Developing an open mind
  • Practicing quietness in mind and body
  • Developing a non-competitive, positive self image

Grading policy: Letter grade based heavily on attendance (being in class on time) and participation.
