Mentor: Curt Smith
Student: Chris Miller
Clocktower Records in Grass Valley does more than just sell some of the grooviest used and new albums, CDs, movies, rock posters, cassettes, and 8-track tapes! Did you know they also repair old audio equipment like turntables, amplifiers, tape decks, and reel-to-reel machines? Well, they do, all the way in the back of the store.
That’s where you’ll find Bitney Prep intern Chris Miller (Class of 2020). Chris has clearly demonstrated to his mentor, Clocktower Records owner Curt Smith, that he has all the skills necessary to take on all the old audio equipment that customers drop off in need of repair.
Through his internship, Chris has found his passion. As a matter of fact, he hopes to open his own repair shop in the future. “There’s something about bringing these old machines back to life that really makes me happy,” says Chris. “The intricacies of these machines are amazing, but the thing I like the most about them is that you can fix them with pretty simple tools and a little bit of ingenuity. It all makes sense. There’s clarity. And in an age where technology is becoming more and more remote from the user, these older machines remain within reach. Because of that, they deserve to be saved, and I want to be the guy who saves them.”
