Empire Mine Historic State Park

Mentors: David and Laura

Student: Brenden McSweeny, Class of 2025

Brenden McSweeny from the Class of 2025 has an internship at Empire Mine Historic Park. Empire Mine is the site of one of the oldest, deepest, and richest gold mines in California. In operation for more than 100 years, the mine extracted 5.8 million ounces of gold before it closed in 1956. Now a designated Historic State Park, Empire Mine encompasses 856 acres and fourteen miles of trails, as well as restored gardens and historical buildings.

At his internship, Brenden helps open and close the park, assisting with visitors and tours, and runs the register. He’s learning a lot about park management, as well as the history of this historic site. Brenden really appreciates the guidance, patience, and teaching of his mentors, David and Laura.
